AirAsia X: A321XLRs for A330-900s
- 31 August 2019 - AirAsia X, the long-haul unit of the AirAsia Group, has ordered 30 Airbus A321XLR long-range aircraft. Those aircraft come instead of 22 additional A330-900neos out of a provisional order for 34 signed at the Paris Air Show in June. The airline finalised the remaining twelve A330-900s to firm orders.
Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of the AirAsia Group explains the deal: 'The A321XLR offers the longest flying range of any single-aisle aircraft and will enable us to introduce services to new destinations. This order also reaffirms our selection of the A330neo as the most efficient choice for our future wide-body fleet. Together, these aircraft are perfect partners for long-haul low-cost operations and will allow us to build further on our market leading position in this fast-growing sector.'
The new contract increases the number of A330neo aircraft ordered by AirAsia X to 78, still making the airline the largest airline customer for the type. The AirAsia Group also strengthens its position as the world’s A320 Family customerlargest airline customer for the A320 Family, with orders for 622 aircraft.
AirAsia X currently operates 36 A330-300s on services to points within the Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East. A couple of weeks ago the airline received its first A330neo, which joined the fleet of AirAsia X Thailand. A second aircraft joins the affiliate's fleet by the end of the year. (Image: Airbus)
