Airbus A320 (A320-214) - Air Berlin - D-ABFF - Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport (FRA) - July 2012.

Air Berlin was a German airline, for some time the second largest in Germany after Lufthansa. It was founded in 1978 by an American company as Air Berlin USA and began operating charter flights from Berlin Tegel Airport. At that time only airlines from France, Great-Britain and the United States were allowed to fly through air corridors to and from Berlin. Air Berlin started operations with two Boeing 707s. In 1990, after the German unification, Air Berlin became a Germany-registered airline. Apart from charter flights, it also developed as a low-fare scheduled airline and It took over several other German airlines like DBA (formerly Deutsche BA) and LTU, plus the Swiss carrier Belair and the Austrian airline Niki.
In 2011 Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) took a major share of 29.1 percent in Air Berlin, but this became a bad investment because of increasing financial problems at the German airline. Efforts to restructure the company failed and it ceased operations in October 2017. At that time the Airbus A320 formed the backbone of the narrowbody fleet of Air Berlin.
