Spanair was a Spanish airline, founded in 1986 and with its main base at Barcelona El Prat Airport. Spanair was initially a charter airline and operations began in March 1988. In 1991, the airline launched long-haul flights to North and Central America and in 1994 it started domestic flights within Spain. During its first years, SAS Scandinavian Airlines was the major shareholder of the company. At first, Spanair operated McDonnell Douglas MD-80 Series aircraft. Later it replaced them with the Airbus A320 and A321. On long-haul flights the airline used the Boeing 767-300. In 2009, Spanair was sold to Catalonian investors. SAS remained a minority shareholder. Because of financial problems, Spanair ceased operations in January 2012.
