Singapore Airlines (SIA) has received its first Airbus A350-900ULR (Ultra Long Range). On 11 October SIA launches a non-stop service between Singapore and New York with this aircraft.

The new route requires an average flying time of 18 hours and 45 minutes and will then be the world's longest commercial air service. New York will be followed by non-stop connections to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Singapore Airlines has ordered seven A350-900ULR aircraft. They are configured in a two-class layout, with only 161 seats: 67 in business class seats and 94 in premium economy class. Singapore Airlines is one of the largest customers for the A350 XWB Family. It has ordered 67 A350-900s, including the seven Ultra Long Range models. SIA currently flies 22 A350 XWBs.

The newest variant of the A350 XWB can fly further then anyh other aircraft in commercial service at the moment. It has a range of up to 9,700 nm (17,964 km), or can stay in the air over 20 hours non-stop. The main change of the A350-900ULR over the standard A350-900 is a modified fuel system which increases fuel capacity by 24,000 litres to 165,000 litres. The aircraft also features aerodynamic enhancements, including extended winglets. The new winglets will be applied to all in-production A350-900 aircraft.

Airbus has received firm orders for 890 A350 XWB aircraft from 46 customers and has so far delivered almost 200, which are in service with 21 airlines. (Photo: Airbus)
