GECAS orders 20 Boeing 737-800BCF conversions

Boeing 737-800BCF West Atlantic

- 18 July 2018 -
GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) has ordered 20 Boeing 737-800BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter) conversions and taken options on another 15. Contracts were signed at the Farnborough Airshow 2018. The aircraft lessor already had 15 conversions on order.

The commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric is the launch customer of the 737-800BCF. It took delivery of the first converted jet in April and leased it to the Swedish cargo carrier West Atlantic. GECAS sees a growing air express cargo market.

Boeing has now commitments from more than half a dozen customers for a total of 80 conversions. The 737-800BCF carries more payload – up to 23.9 tonnes (52,800 lbs) - and flies farther – 3,750 km (2,000 nm) than 737 Classic freighters. Converted 737-800s also offer newer technology, better fuel efficiency and more reliability than earlier narrowbody freighters.

Modifications take place at several locations, including Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services, and Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering (STAECO) in China. The work includes installing a large main-deck cargo door, a cargo-handling system and accommodation for up to four non-flying crew members or passengers. (Photo: Boeing)
