BA brings BOAC livery back in the air

Boeing 747 BOAC

- 21 January 2019 -
British Airways will paint one of its Boeing 747-400 aircraft in the former BOAC livery.

The aircraft involved, G-BYGC, will be repainted in Dublin and arrive back at Heathrow on 18 February. The project is part of the the airline’s centenary celebrations. G-BYGC is the first BA airplane to receive a popular design from the airline’s past. More aircraft will follow, but the airline doesn’t give details yet of the other planned retro liveries.

BA says that it has deliberately chosen a 747 for the BOAC livery, because the 747-400 is a later variant of earlier 747 versions operated by the airline. The BOAC livery will remain on the Boeing 747 until it retires in 2023. By this time, most BA 747s will be withdrawn from service and replaced by modern types like the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

On 25 August 1919, the first forerunner company of British Airways, Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited (AT&T), launched the world's first daily international scheduled air service between London and Paris. Today's British Airways was formed in 1974 by a merger of British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), British European Airways (BEA), Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines.

The arrival of G-BYCG at Heathrow coincides with the 50th anniversary of the first Boeing 747 flight a few days earlier. (Images: British Airways)
