Zambia Airways began in 1964 as a subsidiary of Central African Airways, but became an independent airline in 1967. Its first aircraft types were the Douglas DC-3 and De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver. In later years it operated the BAC One-Eleven, Hakwer Siddeley HS.748, Douglas DC-8, Boeing 707 and 737-200, McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and ATR 42. For cargo operations it used a single Boeing 757 freighter. In the 1990s Zambia Airways ran into financial trouble and it ceased operations in 1995.
