Primera Air intends to use the airplanes to commence flights between Europe and North America. They will be fitted with auxiliary fuel tanks to increase range so that aircraft are able to connect Europe and the US east coast non-stop. The company says that the MAX 9 has lower costs per seat than widebody airliners operated on transatlantic services.
The airline currently flies a mix of nine Next-Generation 737-700s and 737-800s to more than 70 airports in Europe. It is part of the Primera Travel Group that operates travel agencies and tour operating companies in Scandinavia, Iceland and Estonia.
Boeing has now accumulated orders for more than 3,700 737 MAX aircraft to 87 customers worldwide.
