A220 gets more range and weight
- 21 May 2019 -
Airbus will increase the A220's range and maximum take-off weight. The airframer can deliver the first aircraft with the new specifications in the second half of 2020.
The A220's range will increase by up to 833 km (450 nm). Maximum range for the A220-100 will become 6,297 km (3,400 nm) and for the A220-300 6,204 km (3,350 nm). The maximum take-off weight (MTOW) will reach an additional 2,268 kg (2.3 metric tonnes). The A220-100's MTOW will be brought up at 63.1 t and the A220-300's at 69.9 t.
The performance increase is achieved by taking credit of existing structural and systems margins as well as existing fuel volume capacity. The improvements will allow airlines to open new routes, connecting, for example, cities in Western Europe with the Middle East or cities in Southeast Asia with Australia.
To date, Airbus has orders for 530 the A220, formerly known as Bombardier CSeries. On 20 May 2019, Airbus delivered its 12,000th aircraft ever in its 50-year history. Number 12,000 was the 12th A220 for Delta Air Lines. (Photo: Airbus)
Apart from the A220, EgyptAir currently operates a fleet of 15 Airbus aircraft and has 15 A320neo aircraft on order. (Photo: Airbus)
