China grounds 737 MAX 8 after crash

Boeing 737 MAX 8 Ethiopian Airlines

- 11 March 2019 -
China's aviation authority has grounded the country's airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The grounding follows the fatal accident of 737 MAX 8 ET-AVJ of Ethiopian Airlines on Sunday 10 March.

Ethiopian Flight ET302 crashed six minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa, killing 157 people on board aircraft from 35 countries. The aircraft was bound for Nairobi, Kenya, and hit the ground about 60 kilometres south-east of the city. The airline has also grounded its four remaining 737 MAX 8s. Cayman Airlines, operator of two MAX 8s, decided to do the same.

The crash is the second fatal accident involving the 737 MAX 8 since it entered service in May 2017. The first crash involved a Lion Air aircraft, which also came down after take-off. This happened near Jakarta, Indonesia, in October 2018. All 189 people on board died.
