Miami Air 737-800 slips off runway

Boeing 737-800 Miami Air runway overrun Jacksonville

- 4 May 2019 -
A Miami Air Boeing 737-800 (N732MA) with 143 people on board has overrun a runway at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida and slid off into St. John’s River. The aircraft ended in shallow water and on pictures it appears that most of the fuselage remained above the water.

According to information from the Sheriff of Jacksonville all people aboard survived, but 21 of them have been brought to hospital for treatment of injuries. The aircraft was performing a charter flight (LL293) for the US Department of Defense and arrived from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, bringing troops back home. The incident happened at 9:40 pm on Friday 3 May. The weather was bad at the time of the incident. A heavy thunderstorm was moving through the area.

The airplane is 18 years old. Boeing delivered it to Miami Air in April 2001. It was operated several times for European holiday airlines during busy summer seasons. Airlines included were XL Airways in Britain and Germany, and, during the last three years, TUI Netherlands.
