McDonnell Douglas MD-80 (MD-82) - American Airlines - N499AA - Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Int. Airport (FLL) - September 2007.

American Airlines was by far the biggest operator of the MD-80. The aircraft was the workhorse of the airline from the 1980s. The Super 80 era at American began in May 1983, when it became the first large US airline to introduce the aircraft. In 2003, American operated a peak number of 62 MD-80s, around one-third of all MD-80s produced by McDonnell Douglas. American took delivery of its final new build MD-80 in 1992. but also acquired fleets of the type after mergers/takeovers of Reno Air and TWA, also including some MD-87's and MD-90s. American Airlines retired the last MD-80 on 4 September 2019. The final MD-80 revenue flight was from Dallas Fort Worth to Chicago O’Hare International Airport. From there it was ferried to Roswell to join a number of other MD-80s retired the same day.
